WHAT IS WAGR WEEKEND?
WAGR Weekend is the IWSA’s annual family gathering held in a different city each summer. Families attending WAGR Weekend find a fun, informal gathering where we meet in person to share information and experiences, provide support and companionship, and find acceptance and friendship. Spending the weekend with other WAGR families in an informal setting provides a rare opportunity to truly relax among other people who understand your life and challenges. This IWSA-sponsored event is the one time each year we get to meet with each other in person and learn of new developments related to caring for individuals with WAGR/11p deletion syndrome. Some years we have had physicians and/or researchers speaking to us; others we have had more informal discussions and sharing of experiences and relevant information. The WAGR Weekend “host” family changes from year to year, just like the physical location. Host families generally help organize the event, provide volunteer assistance for children during our Saturday morning family meeting, and arrange for meals and activities. WAGR Weekend events have been held in Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, and Minnesota. WAGR Weekend 2015 will take place in San Diego, California and WAGR Weekend 2016 is scheduled for Asheville, North Carolina.
