HOSTED BY THE KRANTZ/MARSHALL FAMILY
In July more than 25 families gathered again in Gaithersburg, Maryland for WAGR Weekend 2012. First time WAGR Weekend attendees included families from Oklahoma and Colorado—and they were warmly welcomed by returning families from Michigan, Maryland, California, Ohio, New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. We were thrilled to welcome and meet our new WAGR friend/family, the Kamimuras, from Japan. Mom Masayo, with husband Hirochika and son Kazuki, traveled from Japan to Maryland to attend WAGR Weekend. They also visited the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, where WAGR/Aniridia studies were ongoing.
During our Saturday morning family meeting, Dr Joan Han from the NIH shared information about the ongoing WAGR studies. Dr Kopp, NIH nephrologist, presented interesting and informative information about kidney disease and complications in individuals with WAGR Syndrome. Both physicians were available to meet individually with families to address specific concerns and questions. During WAGR Weekend, several families also went to the NIH and participated in a ½-day study related to WAGR research and food/meals.
While parents and adults participated in the morning “meeting”, volunteers entertained the kids in the gymnasium. From basketball and soccer to manicures and arts and craft, the kids had a grand time! After a catered lunch, families enjoyed the afternoon at the outdoor pool, on the putt-putt golf course, in the gym, and spending time together at the community center.
