UMBRELLA study to improve Wilms tumor survival and treatment options
In August 2019, IWSA representatives Shari Krantz, Kelly Trout, and Adam and Jenny Gunckle met with researchers and clinicians at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Discussions with Kathy Pritchard-Jones, Professor of Paediatric Oncology, University College London, and staff members, focused on Wilms tumor and WAGR syndrome, and the exciting and promising work being done in the UK. Professor Pritchard-Jones and Senior Research Associate Reem Al-Saadi highlighted the UMBRELLA project and the impressive multi-country collaborations involved in this far-reaching study.
During the past 15 years, wide-ranging discussions on global strategies for children with renal tumours have evolved between the International Society of Paediatric Oncology Renal Tumor Study Group (SIOP–RTSG) and the US-based Children’s Oncology Group (COG) during meetings and workshops. These conversations have resulted in sharing of data and knowledge, which has been used in the design of the current UMBRELLA guideline for diagnostics and treatment. Successful implementation of the UMBRELLA protocol will have the potential to shape future therapeutic approaches and to improve outcomes through several measures. The UMBRELLA protocol provides guidelines for clinical practice and will hopefully stimulate further international collaboration with harmonization of treatment protocols and research.
